Heat Rating – Sweet – 1 Flame
Regency Christmas novella

Blurb

A perfect Christmas wedding, a snowstorm, and a shocking secret. What could go wrong?

Susanna Lorican must marry the man she loves before the truth is discovered, or face the gossip of the ton. With an unexpected snowstorm injuring the minister, her future hangs in the balance.

Viscount Camden Beckinworth vows to keep his bride safe, even if he must betray her confidence. When their love is put to the test, how will he uphold her honor without jeopardizing his own?

Second edition. Newly revised and edited.

Excerpt

As he lifted his fist to knock, the door swung open, and the loveliest woman he had ever seen scowled at him. Then a shriek split her lips and damn near ruptured his eardrums.

She halfway closed the door and ducked behind it. “Camden, why are you here? Do you wish for bad luck? The blasted snow is already an omen!”

“Susanna! Language.” Lady Lorican hissed at her from somewhere in the room. Footsteps resounded, then she pushed opened the door and pursed her lips at Camden.

He fidgeted under her intense scrutiny and dropped his gaze. After she stepped back, he crossed the threshold and nodded his gratitude at the baroness. At least her presence established a semblance of decorum and would silence any wagging tongues.

“Now, Susanna.” He held up his hands to placate her as Lady Lorican closed the door. “Before a string of unladylike curses flies from your lips, allow me to explain. The—”

Susanna stomped toward him and poked him in the chest. Then she sniffed and wrinkled her nose. “You cad. Have you been drinking and smoking? You should not be here.”

Camden expelled a long breath. “I know, darling, but I’m relaying a message from your father. There’s been a slight change of plans.”

She rolled her dark eyes. “I already know we must have the ceremony inside. I’m not happy about it, but I accept it.”

“I see.” Camden arched his eyebrow. How was she so calm? His dear fiancée had been daydreaming about marrying him under the ivy-festooned latticework in the courtyard and even sketched how she imagined the scene to look. Lady Lorican had probably already pulled the younger woman back from the edge of panic. “There’s something else.”

Excerpt

Oh, my. The air in her lungs froze as he teased and tasted her lips in a decadent, feather-soft kiss. She moaned into his mouth and closed her eyes.

“You are so beautiful.” He trailed his lips down her neck.

“Camden.” She gasped and gripped his broad shoulders for an anchor in the storm of bliss threatening to sweep her under. Spots dotted her vision like twinkling stars peeking through dark clouds. She blinked several times and nodded to the entryway. “We must control ourselves. Anyone could see.” The smirk crawling up his cheeks clenched something deep and primal inside her. She breathed harder and inched closer to his heaving chest.

“Let them. We are betrothed. Two people in love who are about to wed are expected to kiss.”

“Kiss, yes,” she whispered. “You, my lord, make love with your lips.” Heat flamed in her cheeks and surely reddened her face.

Camden laughed and trailed his fingers up her bare arm to the puffed sleeve. “Do I? You have never admitted that before.”

“There are some things you should not be privy to.”

“Really? I’m honored that my bride appreciates the way I kiss. If she didn’t, what kind of man would that make me?”

She stepped away and smacked his biceps. “There are eyes and ears everywhere, Camden. Especially today. I’m positive the servants are already gossiping that we are spending time together on the one day we should keep our distance. It is bad luck.” And since their chaperone had left them unaccompanied, she expected another servant to arrive any minute, courtesy of her mother.

Camden drew her back into his arms and brushed his lips across her hairline. “I make my own luck. We control our destiny, Susanna; no one else. Besides, you have nothing to worry about. The one activity we shared truly worth gossiping about will never reach the light of day.”

#MFRWHooks – Good job, man. Way to control your temper.

Christmas in August? Damn right!

Series: Deerbourne Inn
Publisher: The Wild Rose Press
Release Date: November 16th, 2020
ASIN: B08L73TB9C
Genre: Romantic Suspense
Length: 40k
Heat Rating: 3 Flames

Blurb

Divorced dad Birley Haynes is too busy raising his children and running his family’s music academy to start a relationship. Then Harmony Holdich, his high school sweetheart, returns home to Willow Springs, Vermont for Christmas and falls into his bed. She brings light and fun back into his life, but he can’t brush aside the threatening incidents around his workplace.

Harmony hadn’t expected a complication like Birley, especially so soon after the death of her unfaithful husband. With her life a mess, she plans to move across the country and start over. All she can offer him is a fling, but her heart yearns for more.

When the threats rise, how will Birley keep his children safe and convince Harmony to give love another chance?

Excerpt

He sighed heavily. Snapping at her wouldn’t convince her to stick around. “Have you thought about me over the years?”

Her bottom lip trembled, then she sucked it between her teeth. “Of course I have. High school was a long time ago, and our dreams clashed. You wanted a laidback life, even though you cut loose with Susannah in college. I wanted big-city living, and I got it. I like it.”

“So a rich-ass condo means that much to you? You want a new job slaving away five or six days a week for some major corporation until you’re exhausted?” He silently cursed. Not only did he slave away at his job, he was growing more tired of it by the day.

Good job, man. Way to control your temper.

In the back of his mind, he’d always believed he and Harmony would find one another again. Susannah and Claude didn’t compute. How crazy was that? Did he marry someone so different from himself because, subconsciously, he didn’t want the relationship to work?

A frown creased her brow. “I don’t need or want expensive things, but I like to work, to feel useful. My dream home is a little yellow bungalow with a big yard in a suburb.” She rocked in the chair as though she longed to jump up and run out the door. “I don’t want to argue. Let’s finish eating and hit the slopes.” She polished off her chips in a handful of loud crunches.

“What did you expect?” His throat constricted. “We’ve never hashed this stuff out since Susannah and Claude were always stuck up our asses. It’s time we deal with it.”

She scowled, then finished her grinder.

Birley gritted his teeth. Why had he been so stupid all those years ago? He’d wanted her to attend the University of Vermont with him, but she balked at another lengthy stint in school. He never should’ve walked off, leaving her crying on the porch of her parents’ house. She wanted time to think about her future—they’d only graduated from high school that morning—but her refusal didn’t mean she’d stopped loving him.

Too bad he hadn’t realized the truth at the time. She’d hurt his pride and broken his heart. Nothing mattered but hurting her in return. They avoided each other for the rest of the summer, then he headed off to the university.

God, how he’d missed her. She’d continued to work for her uncle while earning her accounting degree at a local community college and later moved to New Jersey for her job. Any chance of repairing their relationship had left with her, but by then, he was with Susannah.

Birley ate the rest of his sandwich, which slid down his gullet like cardboard. “No matter what you decide, I’m happy you’re home now.” The hope in his chest deflated. He stood and tugged on his gloves. “Let’s hit one of the blue squares. You okay with that?”

She nodded and followed him up. After they threw away their trash, they left the lodge.

#MFRWHooks – A piercing beep blasted her eardrums. “What the hell?”

Series: Deerbourne Inn
Publisher: The Wild Rose Press
Genre: Romantic Suspense
Length: 40k
Heat Rating: 3 Flames

Blurb

Divorced dad Birley Haynes is too busy raising his children and running his family’s music academy to start a relationship. Then Harmony Holdich, his high school sweetheart, returns home to Willow Springs, Vermont for Christmas and falls into his bed. She brings light and fun back into his life, but he can’t brush aside the threatening incidents around his workplace.

When the threats rise, how will Birley keep his children safe and convince Harmony to give love another chance?

Excerpt

Harmony bolted upright. A piercing beep blasted her eardrums. “What the hell?”

“Get dressed. That’s the smoke alarm.” Birley launched to his feet. Moonlight sharpened the rigid planes of his back as he grabbed his clothes. He scowled at her, his irises glinting. “Now.”

“Right.” She scurried from the bed and yanked on her sweater and pants.

He booked it out of the room, then returned and tossed Harmony her jacket. He’d already buttoned his coat haphazardly across his chest.

She jerked on the jacket and her boots, her pounding heart striking her ribcage.

He looped her fuzzy scarf around her neck before pulling her down the hall.

“I don’t smell smoke.” She shivered. The alarm blared from the living room ceiling, and a built-in light flashed red like a demonic beacon in the darkness. No puffs of gray filled the apartment, but what about downstairs? She headed toward the main door.

He tightened his grip on her arm, stopping her. “All the alarms are linked, upstairs and down. Go out the back. I’ll check downstairs.”

“Hell no. We stay together.”

“Don’t fight me on this. Get going.” He pressed a quick kiss to her lips, then pushed her toward the kitchen. After he lightly touched the doorknob, testing it for heat, he jerked open the main door and hustled down the stairs.

Harmony bit her lip. She clutched the kitchen doorjamb, but the back door might as well be bolted shut. No way would she leave him in a burning house. She strode back across the living room. The narrow staircase widened as she descended. Another blinking red light cast shadows along the paneled walls. She gripped the rail for balance. The shrill, intermittent beeps quickened her pulse. Each pause of silence was a godsend, but the whistling and crackling of fire seized the coveted peace.

She tapped the doorknob. Whew! It was cool to the touch. Fire thrived on ventilation and oxygen, so she hurried into the hall and closed the door to protect the upstairs. Tendrils of smoke wafted along the ceiling. Her nose twitched. Where was he? A whooshing noise split the air. She raced toward the pipes practice room. Heat slicked her brow. Flames lit the darkness. She gasped and clutched her chest from the open doorway.

Birley aimed an extinguisher at the flames licking the walls, but the fire was spreading faster than the white foam could cover. Water sprayed from the sprinklers and slicked back his hair. A draft from the broken window whipped the flames, which ignited a stack of fallen sheet music. He stomped on the papers, smothering the sparks.

What the hell was he thinking? The acrid stench of gasoline and gray smoke stung her nostrils. She coughed, spitting mucus on her sleeve, and jerked her scarf over her mouth and nose. Sweat trickled down her back. Her eyes watered. The muscles in her neck and shoulders pulled so tight she ached. Glass shattered in another parlor, and she jumped.

“Birley! We have to go.” She rushed into the room and grabbed his arm.

“What are you doing in here?” He squirted foam at a fiery bookcase. Frenzy widened his eyes. He coughed hard and wiped his arm across his sooty face. “Go. The alarms are connected to the security company, so the cops and the fire department should be on their way.”

“Damn it. You are leaving. Another room is on fire.” So she assumed. Why else would the glass break? Would the ceiling above her cave in? No flames touched it—yet. “Think about your kids.”

He stiffened. Foam fizzled from the nozzle in a short, quick burst. The canister slipped from his hands and dropped with a loud clunk. “You’re right.” He pushed her out of the room, tugged the sleeve of his coat over his hand, and gripped the door. The barrier slammed shut behind them. They raced out the back door.

#MFRWHooks – How would that thick hair feel against her skin?

Book 2 in the Arresting Onyx series
5-Flame Romantic Suspense

Blurb

Injured Parole Officer Jeremiah “Jim” Borden never expected Calista Barlow, the sassy blonde waitress he’s craved for months, to ring his doorbell. She slips into his heart—and his bed—but he’s obsessed with a gangland investigation that threatens his career and maybe even his life.

Calista doesn’t trust easily, not with a daughter to protect and the stalker who keeps calling her. After her violent ex-boyfriend returns, she finds solace in Jim’s arms.

Jim may have to forego his need for answers to protect the ready-made family he adores, but how will he and Calista escape an unseen enemy that is always one step ahead of them?

Tagline – When threats escalate, will Jim and Calista succumb, or fight for a love they can’t deny?

Excerpt

Calista entered her bedroom and her mouth dropped open. Oh, God.

Her date reclined on her bed as though he starred in a photo shoot. Candlelight flickered across him. The sultry gleam in his eyes arrested her, holding her captive. His sexy smile weakened her knees. None of her past lovers rocked a pair of classic black slacks and a crisp white dress shirt like he did. His chest hair, a few shades darker than the locks on his head, poked from the parted fabric and teased her.

How would that thick hair feel against her skin? Soft? Coarse? Just right?

Jim was spread out for her pleasure like a Christmas present. She wanted to unwrap him, layer by layer. Maybe he should unwrap himself, so she could enjoy the show.

She let her gaze travel the length of his body to the bulge pressed against his zipper. Perfect. He was hard already. She licked her suddenly dry lips.

“Stare all you want, but it’s more fun to touch.” He patted his thigh, the invitation clear.

“I’m tempted.” She cocked her hip. “I guess the blueberry clafoutis can wait, but you’re a little presumptuous to think this is how the night would end.”

Then again, she did mention having breakfast together. What did she expect him to think?

“End? Honey, we’re just getting started.”

She laughed, grasped the hem of her blouse, and pulled it over her head. Her favorite perfume scented the room, and she picked up the bottle. “You like?”

“Hell, yeah. A lot.”

She sprayed a few drops on her fingers, caressed the pulse at the base of her throat, and dragged her touch down between her breasts. His guttural growl teased across her nerve endings, shooting rockets through her belly. She shimmied her skirt down her hips and kicked aside her heels. A red-satin bra-and-panty set sheathed her body. She locked her hands together behind her back before involuntarily covering her breasts and stomach.

“Damn, look at you. Come here, Calista.”

Excerpt

Everything was her fault. Waves of heat billowed under her skin as her knees gave out. Susanna plopped on the settee with as much grace as a bumbling man deep in his cups. The tears dripping down her hot cheeks splattered on the bodice of her dress and darkened the fabric. The springs in the settee squeaked as Camden claimed the space beside her. He brushed his lips across her forehead in a touch so sweet and light that her heartbeat quickened.

“Breathe, darling. I’ll summon another man of the cloth right away.”

“No.” She gripped his shirt to steady her shaky hands. “The road is not safe for travel. We should not risk another reverend or anyone else becoming injured on our account.”

He nodded and clasped her face. “I love you, Susanna Lorican. Nothing will change that. Stay strong for me. We will get through this.”

She pried from his hold and dashed away her tears. “It’s all my fault. What was I thinking? A winter wedding? I must be insane.”

#MFRWHooks – She never would’ve deemed him a failure…

Book 2 in The Montana Ranch series
Heat Rating – Sweet – 1 Flame
Contemporary Western Romance novella

Blurb

Melody Bennett’s parents trampled on her teenage romance with a drifter ten years earlier. After he disappeared without a word of goodbyes on the night they had planned to run away together, she casts aside her foolish notions of happily ever after and works hard on her family’s ranch.

Max Fortaine returns with a heart guarded by secrets and a sizable bank account that took blood, prayers, and tears to fund. The cowboy disrupts Melody’s peaceful life with stolen kisses and a promise for more. After a lifetime of running, mistakes and regrets, he vows to reclaim the only woman he’s ever loved…if only her overprotective father didn’t stand in his way.

Excerpt

“You were eighteen, fresh out of high school. The year we spent together was wonderful, but we were fools to think it would last forever.” Max tunneled his fingers through his short hair. “The only life you knew was what your father wanted you to know. I left because I loved you, and you’ve led a good, safe life without me in it.”
What a crappy excuse. “You stole my choice. Hardships and problems are part of every relationship. I wanted to work through them with you.”
“Please, darlin’, see this from my point-of-view. I didn’t want the woman I planned to marry to hitchhike, to sleep under bridges, or to rely on strangers for her next meal. I didn’t want you to beg or degrade yourself to get by. I would’ve tried to protect you from all that, and I would’ve failed.” He held his arms open as though in a plea for her to understand. “I couldn’t be a failure in your eyes. You probably would’ve headed back home to Willow Creek after a few months or a few years, and I wouldn’t have blamed you if you did.”
He left without a word of goodbye to protect her from the world—a rough, cruel place he had to survive in on his own? She hated and loved him for it. Who knows what would’ve happened back then if he’d explained his fears to her when they were making their plans to run off. She likely would have promised him anything to appease him. At the time, she would’ve meant it. Now, older and wiser, she wouldn’t deny the truth in his words—she might’ve left him. That shamed her, but she never would have deemed him a failure.
She rubbed tears from her cheeks. “Thank you for telling me. That’s actually better than I expected.”
“You thought I never loved you, that I used yo, right?”
“Yes.” Her chest throbbed from her pounding heart. “How could I not?”

Excerpt

He patted his belt, then frowned and looked down. “I forgot. I feel naked without my firearm.”

He’d stored the holstered pistol in the glove box after arriving at the fairgrounds.

“I’m sure you do. You wear it all the time, even at home.”

“Just a precaution.” He smiled as she walked her fingers across his warm, lightly tanned arm, bypassing a bruise. “Open carry is illegal in this state, so I couldn’t bring mine here with the way I’m dressed. It’s too damn hot to wear a blazer.”

“As long as you keep your firearms away from Lacey, I don’t mind if they’re in the house. I had a long talk with her about gun safety the other night, and she knows not to mess with them.” Calista tightened her fallen ponytail. The sun blazed, threatening to melt everything on the ground, including her. “I can’t believe it’s so hot. What time is it?”

Jim checked his watch. “Around six. Things should cool off by nightfall.”

“Too bad there aren’t any water rides. I would try to bribe the carnie to let us go again and again without getting back in line.”

“No way. Mia did that when she was a teenager. She’d flirt and ride for free. Too many of those guys thought a free entry or one with no wait meant they could get into her pants.” He tilted up Calista’s chin with his fingers. “I’m not in the mood to get into a fight tonight.”

“Ah, my knight in shining armor.”

“Damn right. If only the fair offered a romantic boat ride, I could get you alone for a few minutes. We would sail down the tunnel without a care in the world.”

“We wouldn’t come off that ride fully clothed.” He chuckled and kissed her. “Your bra would be at the bottom of the stream. I guarantee it.”
